Job Description

The High Throughput Biology and Imaging <x{(}>(</x{(}>HTBI) group within Functional Genomics <x{(}>(</x{(}>FxG) at GSK has designed an intelligent, automated platform to accelerate the identification of high value targets using cutting-edge technologies and clinically relevant in vitro models. The use of relevant in vitro models to screen for potential therapeutic targets has already been shown to reduce the attrition rate that the pharmaceutical industry has been struggling with. To gain a finer understanding of gene function at genome wide scale and achieve human pharmacology for discovery leads, our group is engaging in multidisciplinary collaborations to develop novel preclinical models and gene editing technologies.

Specifically, we are seeking a highly motivated and productive cell biology Co-Op/Intern that can assist in executing gene-editing experiments efficiently, and interpret data in the context of multidisciplinary project teams. There is also a need to develop, at scale, innovative methods of gene-gene, gene-gene-drug, and combinatory small molecule screening.

This position will allow the selected candidate to assist a Senior Cell Biologist in designing and executing gene editing experiments using CRISPR-Cas9 transfection in a high-throughput arrayed format.

This position will allow the selected candidate to:

  • Deliver gene editing materials (CRISPR-Cas9, guideRNA, etc.) through delivery methods such as electroporation, lipid-based, or lenti-virus particles to edit primary cells or cell lines of interest.
  • Perform post-transfection analysis by using molecular biology techniques such as DNA isolation, primer design, PCR, Western Blot, Sequencing, etc.
  • Develop cell culture skills by growing and maintaining 2D/3D cell lines or primary cells
  • Deepen their understanding of assay development and various assay methodologies including cell viability readouts (Cell Titer GLO), high throughput flow cytometry, and image-based high content screening.
  • Gain in-sight into using automation techniques such as liquid handlers (Bravo, GNF Washer/Dispenser) for high-throughput delivery
  • Maintain excellent experiment records through electronic notebook
  • Analyze data and present experimental methods and data at program team meetings
  • Contribute to the overall scientific knowledge and skill level of the group through interacting with group member at all levels
  • Help with basic laboratory maintenance tasks
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary matrix team environment

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in Biology or Life Science
  • Broad practical experience with molecular biology and cellular assays.
  • Must be eligible to work in the US at the time of, and for the duration of their employment. Candidates will be required to furnish evidence of US work authorization. STEM OPT extensions are not supported.
  • Able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the 12 month co-op.
  • Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain multiple cell lines and primary cells simultaneously.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, primer design, RT-PCR, and Western Blot analysis
  • Familiar with developing in vitro models assessing the delivery of gene editing materials (lentivirus, siRNA, Cas9-RNP, etc.)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Successfully pass a drug screen and background check prior to assignment target start date.
  • Provide your own funding for relocation and commuting.
