It is good practice to send a follow up email after an interview. It is as important as knowing what to bring to the interview. There are many different ways to communicate your appreciation, but we recommend an email after a Job interview.
An email allows you to think carefully about your words and provides the recipient with something tangible to read or reread. With a follow-up email, you get to put yourself in the recruiter’s face after you have left the interview room, subtly highlight your skills, and generally boost your chances of landing that position.
While phone calls may seem more personable, we advise against them. An unexpected phone call may be placed at an inconvenient time, limiting the information you want to relay. A phone call can also be easily forgotten and does not leave a record of your gesture for the hiring manager to return to.
Before writing a follow-up email, first, consider the following:
- Number of Interviewers – If you had more than one interviewer (as is usually the case), you should consider sending a follow-up email to each one of them
- Subject Line – You need to start getting things right from the onset. A poor subject line weighs heavily on the email body content
- Tone – Never deviate from the professional tone. You are not in the office yet, but you could as well be
- Brevity – This is not the place to pour out everything on your mind. Keep it simple, short and sweet
- Editing – Did we mention that you should edit? If we have, there’s another thing you should do – edit, and edit again!

The best thing about it is that it’s quick and easy to do, but it shows the employer that you do care about the interview and puts a final polish on your application. And, who knows: if (when) you’re successful, you might also be thanking yourself for taking a few minutes to show some extra appreciation.
